• You do not need the smart plug for the echo dot. The smart plug is just an additional accessory that allows you to turn items plugged into it on or off with voice command (through the echo dot) or via the Alexa app.

• The Echo works with or without a variety of smart plugs and having both together makes better use of the Alexa app. The smart plug is very useful and probably priced lower than if sold separately.
