“does the battery go in any particular way new battery does not seen to be charging .should red or green light be on while charging”

The battery connections should fit securely on the battery and they would be different sizes so only one could fit on one connector. The unit should be green while charging. If it is red it likely means the battery isn't connected properly. I would double check that the battery connections are secure to the battery.
