• Thank you for your inquiry. There is a very small transfer time when the UPS goes to battery. On this unit is around 10-12 milliseconds. Most equipment can handle this and it shouldn't damage the external drive.

• No. The battery backup outlets are actually using conditioned power. The response time is instantaneous. I've never had a device damaged when plugged into the battery protected outlets of an APC UPS unit in the more than 20 years I've been using them.
