Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about our BN450MNW UPS. It is not recommended to use unit without grounding since it uses grounding as shunt for protection. If you have questions at your earliest convenience please reach out to APCbySchneider to troubleshoot the issue further. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This would be highly unsafe. Devices with grounded plugs should never be plugged into ungrounded outlets. With a device like this, any malfunction of any connected device would be directed to a nonexistent ground, and you are basically multiplying the risk of connecting a grounded device to an ungrounded plug. More to your question, the surge protection in surge protectors works by directing the surge energy - it has to go somewhere - into the grounding. If it doesn't exist, it could just dissipate by burning out the device instead. Please, for everyone's safety, do not plug any device with a ground prong into an ungrounded outlet via adapters.
