Some of the iPads offer cellular plans through a service provider (Verizon, At&t, etc.). With that you don't always have to be connected to wifi, the same way smartphones work. This one however only has the capability for wifi, and you will have to be connected to a network, it doesn't have its own wifi source. Hope this helps.
