• No. You either have a case that prevents the cord from completely penetrating the port or your not putting it in right. Lick it first.

• Not sure, but I do know that when I bought a cable that was not an Apple product, it did not work. I received a message from Apple saying that it did not recognize my ipod when I tried to download podcasts.
