Grandson lost his airpods. School office has them but say they are not his because they should emit a sound when placed close to the phone. Do they need to be programmed "connected" to a specific phone? How is this done? null

They should connect right to his phone as soon as the phone goes near to them
or else if he had find your iphone on then he can ping the airpods usng the phone

They will only emit a barely audible sound if you activate the lost feature in the Find My iPhone app. But the AirPods are paired to a specific phone -- if they are your grandson's then they will play when they are in his ears and he plays music from his phone.

While this might be true, Bluetooth devices often lose their connection and then have to be repaired. There is no way I would use this pairing as an indicator that they were really his. It also depends if Find my iPhone was setup. If it wasn’t, then that feature cannot be used to identify them. Here’s an official Apple article on the topic. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207581

You can pair these with any newer phone that has Bluetooth (IPhone or Android).

You will only hear the tone when you put them in next to a paired device.
Your only course of action would be to find the original box that came with the AirPods - this has the serial number for the AirPods.
 The inside of the AirPods case also has the serial number printed inside the case on the top of the lid, just see if they match.

They are paired to one iPhone or other device. If that device is near the AirPods, when you open the case they will show up on your iPhone display.
