“Our modem is in the basement, connects to the 2nd floor iMac but not the 3rd floor. So would I connect to the WiFi, then being it up to the 3rd floor and if should work with the 3rd floor iMac? Just want sure if this is the best option.”

Sounds like you want to us this unit as a signal extender. Put this unit on your second floor where your basement signal strength is strong. This unit should now provide a signal to your third floor.
