No. You do not need a screen saver but a protective casing is recommended because it makes it easier to carry and ultimately... lets face it... you're going to drop it. I splurged and got a $50 durable case and I've never had any issues.

If you mean a screen protector. I think it is always advisable ..I got a tempered glass one which I really like.
