5th gen iPad has a fully laminated display, meaning the LCD panel and the front glass are built as one unit with no gap, making it thinner but more costly and complicated to repair. The 6th gen iPad is very slightly thicker without a fully laminated display, but it has support for 1st generation Apple Pencil where the 5th gen does not support Apple Pencil.
