“Just tried with XR and both streaming choices are interrupted soon after connecting. Video doesn’t last more than a minute or two. Services are Slinbox and Spectrum cable app. Why does this happen? Is there a setting I need to change on the iPhone?”

Try screen lock phone setting, turn off to never while using it, in general.display

Make sure that those devices and services allow one to cast using an HDMI cable. Some apps and services block one from using this connector with their services or app.

I used my iPhone X multiple times. Never had a problem. Could be some connectivity issue with your HDMI cable
