There really has never been a backlit logo, per se. The effect was achieved by allowing the backlight for the screen to shine through a hole in the case that was shaped like the Apple logo. In the MacBooks specifically, the case is so thin, cutting the hole for the logo would have weakened it.

Please try again later.the apple logo on newer MacBooks doesn't illuminate because the lid is too thin to fit a back light in the housing. apple is trying to make their MacBooks thinner, lighter, and more powerful and this is one of the steps that they had to take in order to have a thinner MacBook.
