Trackpads are often a crucial adaptive device for people with injuries and disabilities. Someone with a broken arm, for example, might have a really hard time using a regular mouse, but they can put the trackpad on a cookie sheet in their lap and still go to work, rather than have to take time off. Similarly, people with connective tissue disorders or permanent disabilities can find relief in alternative methods. If you don't need it, consider yourself very lucky indeed! Those who depend on adaptive devices agree with you that we wish they were cheaper, but to answer your implied question yes there's a reason they exist.
