“When hooking up other external drives with my MacBook Air it gives me a "drive needs power" error and won't work. Does this require an external power source or should it run off my MacBook Air with a USB connection?”

It may be that your laptop doesn't have enough power for whatever you have plugged into it. You may need a powered USB multiple connector. My desktop has more than enough power for the Superdrive. You can check under your "System Report" on your Mac to see how much power is available for USB connections.
