What is the difference between “good” HDR and “bad” HDR? I assume that the Apple has “good” HDR, since my 4K picture is impeccable. null

4k and HDR are different. HDR also Varys based on the tv itself. 
4k is the resolution of the screen. How many pixels are on the screen. 
HDR (High Dynamic Range) has to do with the color contrasts. It makes the blacks blacker, makes the colors more bold, and tends to intensify brighter colors. Regardless if you have hdr or not, 4k will have a sharp picture. 
HDR also varies in the sense that say OLed tvs give the deepest black color you can get in an led tv. So it takes less color to achieve the larger contrast. Where as Samsung’s QLed doesn’t achieve the black levels the OLed tvs get, however it has a higher range of overall colors and tends to be much brighter overall. 
There is not really a bad HDR as any 4k(UHD) tv would benefit from an HDR update.

I have noticed with some less quality HDMI cables I don't seem to get the full quality of what I would expect. If you have a 4k TV and are happy with your quality I would stick to the higher quality HDMI cables for the Apple TV because it is going output the highest image quality easily.

As far as I can tell it's to do with your TV. It improves the color and picture. Really didn't notice a huge difference but that could be the content I was watching. If your TV can handle hdr then there Is an option in the Apple TV to turn it on. It changes the resolution and gives you a blank screen if your TV can't handle the function.

Excellent picture quality. The new 4K version supports the highest picture and sound quality so far. Clarity from movies downloaded from I tunes is over the top. Did have to change where the hdmi cord was plugged in my Tv. Apple TV automatically chooses the highest quality your tv will display.
