Your version can only make calls while it is blue toothed to your phone. you have the GPS version. not the cellular version

With either version you can text and make calls. The only difference is that with the cellular version you don’t need to have the iPhone with you since the cellular version can be independent from the iPhone. With the other version of the Apple Watch you need to have the iPhone with you or close by in order for you to be able to text or make calls.

It uses your Bluetooth the way to know if yours is the cellular one is if it has the red dot.
