What is the purpose of adding another router/modem? null

None really if you continue to use your ISPs modem, I bought my own cable modem and stopped leasing it from the ISP. As to the router portion, you may prefer to have and use your own router vs the combo provided by your ISP (modem +router), this provides you the opportunity of having a better WiFi network depending on what you buy and it also gives you network independence from any ISP by simply replacing the ISP without having to redo your entire network.
