You can use it in the dark, either in tablet mode, or the keyboard can be backlit (Function+F3 to make it brighter). I get about 4 hours of use, before the low battery warning, with the screen brightness at a comfortable level and using performance mode. If you scale things back to recommended settings you'll likely get more life. Four hours of heavy use is about all my brain can stand, anyhow.
