The Modem router is out, if your provider supplies/restricts modems.Both routers are very powerful and allow you to access the "backdoor settings)but the RT is open sourced,meaning it is more versatile (vpn's and other software applications can be installed).Go for this one if you already have a modem.You cant have two so the latter would be the choice.Top notch router,IF you need it.

Please try again later.It is neither. see link: https://www.asus.com/Networking/RT-AC3100/ AC3100 Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router with double gaming boost and MU-MIMO It is still a good one. I use it and have no issues. It is essentially the RT-AC88U with the only difference I can find being that the AC88U has 8 lan ports while the AC3100 has 4.
