“I just bought a AC1200 USB-AC Nano Wi-Fi Adapter and they said at the store I could plug it into my Shaw Direct receiver. There is nothing in the package to help with this and I do not want to damage it. I have a Wi-Fi booster for at the terminal.”

I had geek squad install the software so there be no mistakes, guess what, My computer was 5 ft away from a wifi repeater and it sucked, it’s junk take it back

Or configure the port. Check you reciever manual. There are a bunch of variables here. So its pretty hard to say yes or no
