I recorded over the default message as I was setting up the telephone and it worked. However, I had some problems setting up because I did not realize that all you had to do was just plug in (ignore anything in the instruction manual that talks about setting up with your computer!). I would suggest reading the section in the instruction manual. This would be "Answer System Settings (pagge 107 and continuing)." If all else fails, call ATT help or go online to the ATT FIQ section. Good luck. I am quite happy with this system and the remote.
