- Answer I recorded over the default message as I was setting up the telephone and it worked. However, I had some problems setting up because I did not realize that all you had to do was just plug in (ignore anything in the instruction manual that talks about setting up with your computer!). I would suggest reading the section in the instruction manual. This would be "Answer System Settings (pagge 107 and continuing)." If all else fails, call ATT help or go online to the ATT FIQ section. Good luck. I am quite happy with this system and the remote.

- Answer This set consists of the base station (corded phone) and the handset (cordless phone). The handset is at&t part number TL86003 and it can be purchased separately to expand the set with as many as 12 handsets. It does not appear that Bestbuy sells the handset separately, but other retailers and the manufacturer do.

- Answer Yes, you have the option of recording your own message. However, it has a serious flaw regarding redial. Caller ID will give you an area code and telephone#. But, without the #1, you will still have to dial yourself because the #1 has to be inserted.
