No, I am running this through the auxiliary on my Bose Wave and it didn't need the amplifier so I put my amplifier in a box!

If you are using passive speakers, connect the turntable to a phono or line level input on the stereo amplifier or receiver and connect the speakers to the speaker outputs on the amplifier or receiver. If you are using powered speakers (aka active speakers) the turntable may be connected directly to the active speaker.
