Yes, as this turntable has no built in speaker. But it does have it's own built in amp. So you don't need an individual amp or amp/receiver. But you do have to have a speaker with it's own power source, like computer speaker or some of the larger portable stereo speakers that are out now. The switch on the back of the turntable needs to be switched to 'phono' if you have the RCA plugs out to a receiver/stereo system with an amp. If you are using powered speakers (stand alone) then the switch on the back needs to be switched to 'line out' to utilize the internal amp in the turntable. I plug into a marshall stereo speaker which has it's own power source. Wonderful sounding for a small all in one speaker but a bit pricy. You can get less expensive powered speakers or a good set of computer speakers and plug in via 'line out' from the turn table.
