Does this need a crystal for the "old" 78rpm discs? null

far as I know you can just hit both speed buttons at the same time and place the record down and play.have not tried it my self but have seen it done on you tube with the parts that come with unit

for 78 rpm discs you need Shure M78S cartridge which has a wide needle. If you play 78rpm disc on the LP120 with the cartridge which came with the player will damage the needle
