Ours works well. My suggestion is to make sure you didn't accidentally turn on the bagel mode. That will turn off the heating element on one side of each toaster slot.

It pretty much toasts both sides of the bread for me. You might need to play around with the settings.

There is a button for toasting only one side.

By not selecting the bagel setting. If you let it do its normal thing, it toasts both sides. Bagel setting will only do the sides facing the very middle of the toaster, if that makes sense.
