How do you get the toaster to toast both sides of the bread? null

Ours works well. My suggestion is to make sure you didn't accidentally turn on the bagel mode. That will turn off the heating element on one side of each toaster slot.

It toasts both sides at once

By not selecting the bagel setting. If you let it do its normal thing, it toasts both sides. Bagel setting will only do the sides facing the very middle of the toaster, if that makes sense.
