• An ethernet cable allows for a wired (rather than wireless) connection to your internet. The cable plugs your computer to the back of the router. As a result, you get drastic improvements (most often in upload speeds) in internet connection. So yes, this will speed up your computer, but ONLY in terms of internet.

• An ethernet cable connects your computer to your cable modem. As far as speeding up your computer, it doesn't do that.
