Couple of questions for you. Are the filters on the units clean? Are the units located so that there is sufficient air flow? You state "the fan is spreading more dust around and not trapping it." The fan only moves the air after the air passes through the filters. If fan is blowing dust that means filters are not doing their filtering job. Suggest that you clean any washable filter elements or replace the non-washable type and allow at least 4" clearance around the unit(s) to insure adequate air flow.

Purifiers do capture dust, but only if it reaches the unit. One suggestion would be to increase the speed of the purifier or to choose a new location in your space.
