It happens when it detects more "heavy or dirty " particles in the air so it boosts. For example, I usually have it in my bedroom. When I'm straightening my hair (burning) the filter detects that on the air and starts doing it automatically boosting the sucking of more air into the filter, you should see it changing from blue color to green or if there are lots of particles to red color.
