We were unsure how this dishwasher would work without a built-in disposer (which our last dishwasher had). But it's fine. We scrape the large food of the plate, and never pre-rinse the plate. The filter system catches what it needs to, and we clean the fine filter every month or two, which is done by rinsing under the tap for a minute or two. We haven't had any issues, and I think the design is simpler.
