Yes for reading - they do a great job. They may not be comfortable for sleeping if you are a side sleeper though as they would probably hurt your ears. They worked great to block out a window air conditioner too!

If you want something to block noise at night, I suggest ear plugs. My use for the headphones is to listen to recorded books while mowing the lawn, cleaning house and at the fitness center which is noisy due to background music, people talking and barbells banging around. The noise is not completely blocked out but it is just a small muffled sound.

I use them when my spouse is watching tv and I want to listen to music but we are in the same room. I wouldn't wear them sleeping as I am not sure you would be comfortable. I have used them outside in a hammock and fallen asleep and they work great but I am not laying on my side. You would have to try them laying on your side to determine if you can wear them comfortably. They work beautifully to block sound.

The Bose QuietComfort 25 headphones are best against constant noise such as an airplane engine, but will quiet down any background sounds. A lot of customers use them to help block background noise while reading or sleeping. Thanks!
