The speaker is sturdy and I think it would survive a reasonable drop (like off a table top), but I wouldn't drop it off a 6 foot ladder. As for microphone, it doe work as a speaker phone when paired to a phone. If you wanted to use it as a PA, you could use something like the "Mic Speaker" app (or similar) on a smart phone or tablet and use the speaker to address a class or group of people.
