No, the scanner on the Brother HL-L2390DW is not Twain compatible.

In brief, yes. The Brother Utilities package you install allows you to choose Brother's ControlCenter4 software or Windows' software (Scanners and Cameras, which I believe is based on the Twain standard). The Brother software adds some nice additions but the scanner operates just fine using Windows' own software.
