“Why the telephone cord? I assume for faxes. But is a land line connection needed for that? I discontinued my land line service several years ago.”

Please be advised, in order to be able to use the fax funtion on the Brother MFCL2820DW. A phone land line would be needed. Below is a link to the Brother MFCL2820DW specifications.
