Is this machine capable of sewing denim/jeans or upholstery fabric? If so, does it come with the heavy duty needle required? Or would I need to look at a heavy duty model? What is the least expensive model with that capability? Thx null

The Brother XR-9550PRW can sew up to 6mm in thickness, when using a larger size needle.  The machine comes with a needle set that contains sizes 11, 14 and 16.

I think it is sturdy enough for medium type denim/jeans it comes with 3 needle sizes standard. But if you plan to do a lot of heavy, Upholstery fabric you may want a more heavy duty machine. There are machines that are built for that.
