“Confused by the whole thing. Does content have to play on your phone while being cast to your tv? No remote for onscreen navigation similar to roku? What is this thing good for if I have to keep my phone tied up to watch a video or tv station. Confused”

For this version, you don't need your phone at all. You use the remote that comes with it and you just log in to whatever streaming service you have (whether it be Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, Apple TV, YouTube, YouTube TV, Spotify, etc.) to start watching TV shows and movies or listening to music. It is similar to the Roku, but with a way better design in my opinion.

Make sure to download the video app where you want to watch your shows to the device. You can control or navigate the interface using the Chromecast Voice Remote. The option to cast from your phone is still available.
