Will this function if you place it on its side? null

Since there are cooling vents on either side I wouldn't recommend placing it on the sides. There are rack mount UPS units from all the major brands, that are thinner, have a metal case and have the cooling vents and fans on the back. Those could be put on a shelf or under another device.

I wouldn't do it since the air vent holes are on the top of both sides. Heat rises and needs to escape via these vent holes.

laying it on its side will block vents and alter the airflow enough to cause internal components to overheat, I don't think it is recommended.
