Yes, with nearly any DVD+/-RW drive there is backward compatibility with CD+/-RW and +/-R disks. Most people purchase a portable drive such as this to use with a laptop, but I am using it on a tower computer that did not have an optical drive and has no slot for one. Using Velcro tape that one can purchase at a craft store, I have it attached to the top of the tower to keep it stationary. NOTE: It does not write or read Blu-Ray disks.
