• It's for multi-monitoring. It plugs into the display port with a display port cord into the back of a computer.

• Display port can be connected to a graphics card that is equipped with a display port output. I prefer this over the HDMI as this is my primary monitor. Display port has a greater potential maximum in terms of frame rate and resolution. If your graphics card only has HDMI than that is fine - in this case the DP does not need to be connected to anything.
