You can use just about any brand of monitor with another brand. It's not so much an issue with a particular monitor, but whether your son's computer has the proper graphics card to support multiple monitors. You also have to make sure that it can connect correctly. This monitor has 1 HDMI (like a TV) connection and 1 VGA (old school 15-pin trapezoid connector - usually blue in color) connection, and these are common ports on graphics cards. You can find adapters if your graphics card does not have the same connector type as the monitor, but this can get pricey, and it would be best to buy a monitor that your graphics card supports. The short answer is yes, it is "compatible" with other monitors, but it all depends on if the graphics card has dual-monitor capabilities.

Most dual monitor setups come on as they are simple plug and play. (Using Windows 10) Once you see a picture on both screens simply right click on the desktop and choose display settings. From here you can choose to extend (dual screens) or duplicate your screens.
