“If the monitor itself doesn't have VESA compatibility, what separate adapter do I need to buy a for this that will allow VESA mounting?”

I purchased something on amazon for my last dell monitor that was also without the VESA mounting. It just slides into the back where the stand would normally go. It was this one here https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DAYR3ZM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I bought this for my 24" dell monitor in 2017 but it worked fine for this one as I just switched the plate. I forgot to check for the VESA mounting when I ordered it, so I was lucky it worked.

I don’t believe there is any way to mount this to a different stand or wall mount. Easier to find a monitor that has the mount on the back than trying to find some kind of adaptor. Been down that road before.
