Most receivers have built in phono preamps for magnetic (high output) cartridges but if you use a low output moving coil cartridge you may well need a separate auxilliary pre-preamp. (this turntable does have a switchable pre amp but it is intended for line level inputs on your receiver (like the tape or cd or aux input) and would likely overload a typical phono preamp.

But if you were using or wish to use a low output moving coil cartridge you would need a separate preamp Denon provided one for their DL 103 cartridge for about $120 as I recall.

This allows the flexibility of connecting it directly to your system without the need of a phono EQ preamp. This can be disabled if wanting to use an upgraded external preamp.
