“I tried it on an old iphone and the mic quality is amazing for the price. But it will not work with a lightening connector on a new Iphone. The headphone adapter that apple provided only connects to the earphone and not the mic. suggestions?”

You can still use it, all you need is a 3.5mm to lightning connector. Either BestBuy or the Apple store should have it, once you have that adapter connected, you'll be good to go.
