Yes it can, That's how I got my computer system set up I've got a display port going to an HDMI cable going to one monitor and I got a DisplayPort going to an HDMI going to another monitor both off the same video card or GPU card. On my other computer I've got the same setup except I've got a HDMI going to an HDMI monitor and then I got the same trip light with the DisplayPort going to an HDMI cable setup going to the same GPU card.
