You do not have to switch heads going from hardwood to carpet. It has a raise and lower switch on the head so if you feel like it needs more suction you can lower it or for carpets you can raise it if you have high pile.

One has a spinning brush bar (like the floor tool on the Animal),and it can be used on any flooring type. The fluffy soft roller head, which only comes with the Absolute, is made for hard floors and cannot be used on carpeting.
