Hello Jamie, this is Kelly with Dyson. The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool™ Link purifier fan has the ability to detect particulates larger than one micron in the air using two sensors. Particles are tiny fragments such as pollen and smoke that are lightweight enough to be airborne and are therefore easy to inhale. The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool™ Link purifier fan captures these by trapping them in the glass borosilicate fibers of its HEPA filter. VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are gaseous chemical compounds, both human-made and naturally occurring, including fumes and toxins. These are neutralized when they react with the layer of activated carbon on the inside of the filter. Best wishes, Kelly Dyson Customer Support
