Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. When the machine is on, either in heating or cooling mode, it will always be purifying the air. In order for it to purify the air, the machine needs to be drawing air inward through the machine's advanced filtration. You do need to have the machine on in order to achieve that. This model does feature backward airflow mode, so you can have it on, with the air flowing through the base of the loop, rather than outward through the front and into the room.
