Hi there, this is Kelly with Dyson. How close the dock is to a shelf would vary, depending on where your electrical outlet it. The charger cord is approximately 6' so you'll need to install the dock to where the cord reaches the outlet, without being stretched. Best Wishes, Kelly Dyson Customer Support
