In my experience, yes. My carpet is medium pile. When going from hardwood to carpet, I would have to change head. I would NOT recommend this vacuum. Get animal 3 unless you really need features of stick vacuum.

The Motorbar cleaner head is ideal for carpeting and area rugs and the Laser Slim Fluffy is the tool you will want to be using on bare/hard floor surfaces. Having said that, if you do not have any concerns of a rotating brush bar leaving any marks or scratches on hard floors, you can use the Motorbar tool on any surface.
